6 ways of INFLOW (入流) - revised edition

6 ways of INFLOW (入流) -

When all 6 sense organs returned to source : there is no more outflow

1) EYES - When you see your friend wears an expensive watch and you also want to have. That in buddhism is considered "WANT" and hence this is an outflow. Because your eyes go out to see beautiful clothes, pretty watches etc......

However, if you see your friend wearing a big Gemstone and there is no movement in your heart at all, then there is no outflow. That also mean that your EYE sense organ has returned to source. Check yourself a few times to see if they have really returned to source. When your eyes see beautiful things and in your heart there is no want or need. This is inflow.

2) NOSE - When your nose smells nice food and saliva come out in your mouth. That is an outflow because of "GREED" for Good Food.

However, when you see or smell Good Food while your stomach is very, very hungry and you can control the hunger pangs and have no "WANT or GREED",  that is considered INFLOW already as you can contain your NOSE and also BODY well.

To train this, we usually take the 8 precepts because 8 precepts only one meal a day and then whole day, you are hungry one until early 6am then can eat.

3) BODY - Here in BODY, we talk about 4 things :

A) When your body has no need for sexual energy that is considered an inflow - while if a person has any sexual contact that is considered an outflow because "inner energy" goes out and this is bad for cultivation.

The trick here is to pull the sexual energy in to the body and then bring them up through the crown of the head and come out from there especially when you have excess energy. I am not too sure if this is considered an outflow. But so far......so good.

B) The second thing about the BODY is - when you manage to contain your "hunger pangs" and do not let the "hunger pangs" affect your BODY or your mind. This is considered inflow.

C) When someone hits your body - there is a touch of "pain" and if your mind can choose to ignore that pain on your body then that is considered an inflow. You have successfully managed the external pain outside the body or even inside the body like a stomach ache. This is considered an inflow.

D) When feelings come out of your body and you feel hurt and sad - This is considered an outflow. When you see sad movies or sad shows and there is "no feeling" from you then that is considered an inflow. That means that you can contain your inflow very well. However this does not mean that you are a hard hearted person. It means that one need to control your own feelings well. Only when you can control your feelings well then you can go help other people.

Otherwise when other people are feeling very very sad, you also cry with them then that is wrong. That to you is an outflow.

4) MOUTH - When you talk too much that is considered an outflow. Inflow is when you see things and you don't speak out or voice out. Your mind also don't talk ok then that is considered an inflow.

When you taste food, the minute you say this food is nice, is considered an outflow because you enjoy the food.

Inflow is when the food is nice or not, you also eat them happily and no bad thoughts about how bad the food tasted when it is really badly cooked. This is truly considred an INFLOW. Have you ever see monk or nun say that the food tasted badly ? never right ? this is because it is suppose to be like this.

5) EARS - When you hear loud sounds and they irritate you so badly that you start to shout keep quiet or whatever, that is OUTFLOW.

When you hear sounds or your boss scolding you and you keep quiet.......this is considered an inflow. The sound of your ears have returned to source. In fact, it is the object of sound, the subject of sound and the ear consciousness, all 3 returned to source. This is considered an inflow.

When they all have returned to source, the Universe up there will give you a gift like in "Fa Hua Chin"........this gift that you get is the sound of "zzzzz" in your inner ears. You hear them all the time but you are not bothered about them.

This sound of inner sound means that your ear sense organs have returned to source. When one sense organ has returned to source, all 6 sense organs will soon all retuned to source. "Ru Ru Pu Tong"

6) MIND - When your mind is in the present moment all the time, this is considered an inflow. The mind consciousness has returned to source.

Bear in mind that we have the 6th, 7th and 8th consciousness. When you can turn the 6th consciousness, the 7th consciousness follow. So this is easy.

But the 8th consciousness is the tricky one, it is sometimes called the store house. This is because it stores all the memories that we have since beginning times of our lives, many many lives. It is because of our set pattern, our behaviour etc that caused us to come back to samsara, that is to be reborn.

If we are lucky we are reborn into human being. If we are not lucky, we are reborn as cats or dogs or even birds etc. So the best way is to - Go to Amitbha's Pure Land and Don't come back ever !!! or cultivate until you are so Good, you become an enlightened person that way you get to go to a different place. We call this in Chinese "Fa Che".

When see a flower and your thoughts immeditely goes to the first boyfriend who gave you this same flower, maybe is a red rose. That thought is considered an outflow. It is ok to think a bit......but you need to quickly stop thinking and come back to the present moment and focus on your breath to breathe IN and breath OUT again. This is then an inflow.

Interesting, right ?

This is an important concept in Buddhism in order to obtain "awakening" or to become a "Buddha".........an enlightened one.
